The Bumblebee Collective

Who we are

The Bumblebee Collective (TBC) is a business run by the 18+ transition students at Mary Grimes. These young adults have intellectual and/or developmental disabilities; they’ve finished high school and are transitioning to post-school life. TBC gives them the opportunity to work on real world projects creating, marketing, and selling products on- and off-campus. They practice skills like following verbal/written/picture directions, measuring, cutting, operating heat presses and using sublimation to create personalized products like mugs and t-shirts, and tracking inventory/sales. They also learn and use soft skills like working in groups, using kind language, negotiating, compromising, and exercising self-control.

Why The Bumblebee Collective?

Bumblebees make honey. Unlike their European honeybee counterparts, they only make a little honey at any time. It’s just enough to get the hive through a couple of days of stormy weather. A collective is a group of people or entities who share at least one common issue or interest, working together to achieve a common objective. Our commonality is that we are all differently-abled, but all of us can contribute in our own way. We produce limited quantities of products to sell, not to make our living, but to learn vocational and social skills that we will use the rest of our lives. Any “profit” is used to purchase additional materials and items to continue and expand the business.
